A fire destroyed a row of 14 garages at an East County fire complex, and deputies suspect it was started by a woman who’d been living in one of the garages, sheriff’s officials said Friday.
The fire was reported just before 9:30 p.m. Thursday in a complex on East Bradley Avenue, a few blocks east of state Route 67 in unincorporated El Cajon.
Deputies and fire crews arrived to find the row of garages engulfed in flames, the department said in a news release. It took more than an hour to douse the fire in the garages, which are not attached to the apartments.
Investigators figured out which of the garages the fire had started in, and Friday said they suspect it was started by a 43-year-old woman who had been living in the spot with several other homeless people.
Deputies are still searching for her to take her into custody on suspicion of unlawfully/recklessly causing fire to an inhabited structure.
