As we age our hair can begin to change, not just the colour, but also in thickness and strength. However, along with the right care, certain cuts and colours can go a long way to creating a contemporary look. Of course, there is nothing wrong with ageing – it’s a totally natural part of life.
But if you do want to channel a more youthful look, your hair could be the way to go.
According to a hairdresser, there are some styling factors which could dramatically add years to your overall look. Dana Tate is a hairstylist and make-up artist from America who regularly shares videos on these topics via her TikTok page @thedanatate. In one video, she revealed that some simple, but common, hair choices can add as many as “10 years” onto your style.
“Stop doing these things with your hair if you want to look younger,” she warned her viewers. The hairdresser highlighted three key areas where people make mistakes: colour, cut and styling.
Firstly, Dana says that if you do dye your hair, you must make sure it matches your tone and complexion. This is especially true for people who opt for darker shades.
“Hair colour that’s too dark for you is not doing you any favours,” she said. Instead, you should make sure to find a colour match that matches your natural complexion.
Dana continued: “Even if you love dark hair try a few face-rimming highlights to brighten up around your face and make you look at least 10 years younger.”
When it comes to hairstyles, though these change with ever-evolving trends, if there is one mistake people are making it’s the style they choose for their fringe. Just one simple change to your fringe could slice years off your appearance, according to the hairdresser.
“Stop wearing super short bangs. It’s a no,” she said. Though some people prefer a super short fringe, it can be a bit of a bold look. Before committing to the chop, it’s a good idea to consider what fringe might suit you best.
A full fringe can actually span multiple lengths, either halfway down the forehead, resting on the brow or slightly longer. What suits you will depend on your own personal style and face shape.
In the comments section of her video, Dana complements a “side swept fringe” coupled with high or low lights. Ultimately, though, you are the only person who can decide the best cut for you – it’s whatever makes you feel confident in yourself.
But, if you have a style that requires hair spray, Dana urges you to go light on the spritz. Dana said: “All of that hairspray giving you a helmet head, it’s also making you look older.
